CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland businessman and entrepreneur Monte Ahuja has donated $3.5 million to Ohio State University to support students and create an endowed chair at its College of Engineering.
Ahuja received his master's degree in mechanical engineering at OSU in 1970, two years after arriving in Columbus from India, where he earned a degree from Punjab Engineering College.
He moved to Cleveland and took night classes at Cleveland State University to earn a master's of business administration degree while working as an engineer at a Maple Heights automotive company from 1972 to 1975.
As an assignment for a CSU marketing course he developed a business plan for an auto transmission supply company. He received encouragement to put his idea into operation and opened Transtar Industries Inc., in 1975. The Walton Hills-based company became a worldwide distributor of transmission parts to the motor vehicle repair industry.
Ahuja is currently chairman and chief executive officer of Mura Holdings LLC, a private investment company.
David Williams, dean of the engineering college at OSU, will be officially appointed to the Monte Ahuja Endowed Dean's Chair and will use the funds to grow and develop the engineering programs. The College of Engineering has more than 8,500 undergraduate and graduate students.
In June of 2011 Ahuja donated $10 million to CSU to fund scholarships and the Monte Ahuja Endowed Chair of Global Business. CSU trustees voted to rename the James J. Nance College of Business as the Monte Ahuja College of Business.
University Hospitals' Ahuja Medical Center at Chagrin Highlands in Beachwood, which opened in February, 2011, was named in his honor following a $30 million donation by Ahuja and his family in 2006.
